Ryan Anderson asked:

If you are looking for a job in nursing, you have probably noticed variations in the job descriptions. Although there are some common threads among all of these job postings, the majority of the differences will mainly revolve around the specific specialty or the particular nursing position.

Regardless of your particular specialty, there will be certain duties that should appear in almost all nursing job descriptions. Though it may be worded differently, providing nursing care to patients will usually be in the job description. As well as general duties like, maintaining confidential patient records, providing medical advice to patients and/or their families, and explaining procedures and conditions to patients.

A general nursing job description may also give a brief account of the type of healthcare professionals and patients that you will be working with on a daily basis. All job descriptions will require a RN license, but will encourage nurses with additional certifications or credentials. Some even detail the certifications that they would prefer. This documentation will usually need to be presented before a nurse can successfully obtain a particular position.

Other basic information to be included in the job description for a nurse could be the salary range, which will be influenced by the size of the healthcare organization, its location, and the job market for that area. It will also detail the level of nursing experience that they are hoping to attract. Though, most are more concerned with the licensing and credentials, others require a set number of years within the nursing field. The actual working shift may or may not be included, as nursing schedules are typically pretty flexible.

Though these are the basic aspects of a job description for a registered nurse there will be changes for other types of nurses. The differences between nursing job descriptions for particular specialties and general nurses will revolve around the additional certifications and experience levels. The duties will be more detailed and specific to the specialty. For example, instead of saying “to provide care for patients,” the description for a surgical nurse may read, “to prep patients for surgical procedure.” Another detailed difference would be in the clarification of the type of patients that the nurse will care for and the healthcare professionals they will work with on a daily basis. Some job descriptions for nursing specialties may even set working hours. For example, school health nurses, will usually work only during school hours.

The job description for a nursing supervisor or head nurse usually mentions the need to provide care to patients. However, this is not the main duty of a nursing supervisor. Their job description will note the need to head up the nursing staff by setting work schedules, assigning duties, reviewing medical records, and ensuring that nursing supplies are in stock. Most importantly, whether it is specifically stated in the job description or not, the nursing supervisor’s greatest duty is to be responsible for their nursing staff. So, ensuring that they have the proper training and knowledge of policies and procedures is vital.

The job description for a nurse practitioner will explicitly state the need for a higher level of credentials than the RN license, usually a bachelors or masters degree in Nursing. A specific number of years of experience as a nurse practitioner may also be required within the job description. This is a direct result of the advanced duties of a nursing practitioner. The job description for a nurse practitioner may be more closely related to that of a physician than that of a registered nurse. Nurse practitioners are in many cases the first to diagnose and treat an illness. Depending on the state which they are in, a nurse practitioner may also have the ability to prescribe medication.

LPNs or licensed practical nurses job description duties are almost always spelled out. Most of these positions require the nurse to monitor progress, track vital signs, dressing wounds, taking care of a patient’s hygiene needs, and alerting registered nurses and/or physicians of changes in a patient’s status. LPNs may also be required to start IV’s and administer medicines, but these duties will vary by state.

The final difference in job descriptions for nurses will be for those that work in a particular type of healthcare facility. For instance the job description for nurses that work in burn centers, rest-homes, and pediatric facilities will usually differ from those of nurses in typical hospitals. Yet, these job descriptions will revolve around the type of patients being treated. The nurses may develop treatment plans, work with rehab specialists, and teach family members and other caregivers how to assist in the caring for the patient at home.

travel nursing jobs

Beverly Hansen OMalley asked:

There are three types of nursing if you are considering nursing as a career in Canada:

Licensed Practical Nurse, LPN Registered Nurse, RN Registered Psychiatric Nurse, RPN

In Canada all nursing professions are regulated in the public interest and you must pass a licensing exam to become registered in order to practice nursing as a career.

Nursing education for each of these types of nursing has common curricular components and some specialty components. However, the length of nursing education varies and each category has a defined scope of practice.

Licensed Practical Nurse

The Licensed Practical Nurse has 1-2 years of education in a community college or private post-secondary training institute. They have a limited nursing scope of practice that is completely contained within the scope of practice of a registered nurse and cannot work with clients who are complex or require multiple interventions.

In Ontario and some other provinces they are called a Registered Practical Nurse and this is abbreviated as RPN. This can be confusing because a registered psychiatric nurse is also abbreviated as RPN in the western provinces. In many provinces LPN’s were not fully utilized for many years and the numbers of nurses practicing as a licensed practical nurse declined dramatically. Because of the pressures exerted by fiscal restraint and by the nursing shortage which is quite acute, the licensed practical nurse is now in demand again in provinces where they can legally practice.

Registered Psychiatric Nursing

Schools that prepare nurses to enter psychiatric nursing are limited to the four western provinces of British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba. There are over 5,000 Registered Psychiatric Nurses registered with the 4 regulatory authorities in these provinces.

Registered Psychiatric Nursing is not recognized as a separate type of nursing in the eastern provinces so that might be why they call practical nurses RPN’s (Registered Practical Nurses). This term cannot be used in the western provinces because it already used for psychiatric nurses.

The association of Registered Psychiatric Nurses of Canada recommends that the minimum requirement for initial registrants for entry to practice into the profession of psychiatric nursing should be a baccalaureate degree by the year 2012.

On the Registered Psychiatric Nurses Association of Canada website there are 7 education programs listed for psychiatric nursing in all of Canada. There is no legally recognized classification of Psychiatric Technician in Canada. You may see this as a one of the different types of nursing in other countries such as the United States but it is not a recognized type of nursing in Canada.

Registered Nursing

Of the three types of nursing, registered nursing (the RN) is the most common type. It is typically the registered nurse that people think of when they think of the nursing profession. Registered nursing has the broadest nursing scope of practice.

There are no hospital based schools of nursing in Canada. A university education is required. Some colleges have partnered with universities and students can enter a nursing program where the first two years are offered in the college setting and then complete the nursing degree at the university.

Most provinces have registered nurse education programs that are 4 years in length ( 8-9 semesters) but some provinces are now implementing a three year program (9 semesters) as an accelerated program in order to bring more nurses into the Canadian health care system more quickly.

One province in Canada (British Columbia) is responding to increased pressures on the Canadian health care system by broadening the scope of practice of the registered nurse to include some tasks that were previously out of scope.

When these new regulations are put in place, under certain circumstances the registered nurse will be able to provide a broader range of services than that provided by the current regulations including:

ordering ultrasound or X-ray diagnostics (in triage situations) conducting tuberculosis screening managing labor in hospital when the primary care provider is absent

These changes recognize the current education and skills of the registered nurse. However, the changes are specific to British Columbia as the nursing profession in Canada is regulated provincially. It is quite possible and quite likely however, that other provinces will follow suit.

nurse scrubs

ROBYN KNAPP asked:

For those student nurses who are about to graduate, their main priority is to pass the NCLEX-RN examination. The practice of nursing is regulated according to licensing authorities in each state jurisdiction.

Each jurisdiction must ensure that each nurse has the minimum competency to practice nursing in their state. In order to ensure such requirements, the National Council of State Boards of Nurses, Inc.

(NCSBN) has developed a comprehensive examination entitled, National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN). The NCLEX test plan occurs in several steps. The first step is to conduct a practice analysis. This is used to collect data on the practice of entry level nurses. By collecting this data the board can design NCLEX test questions that will be applicable to the majority of graduate nurses.

For instance, it has been found that the majority of new graduate nurses find work on medical/surgical units. The majority of the new graduates surveyed also indicated their primary responsibility was in the delivery of direct patient care. (1) Therefore, questions regarding the care of patients on medical/surgical units is pertinent and important for graduate nurses to know. Although some graduate nurses will tell you that they had more questions on psychiatric nursing or maternity nursing on the NCLEX, this is not the norm.

Six thousand or more newly licensed registered nurses are asked about the frequency and priority of performing more than one hundred and fifty care activities. These activities are analyzed in relation to the impact on patient care, safety and client settings where they are performed. It is in this framework that NCLEX test questions are designed to be applicable in real world settings, thus requiring graduate nurses to be knowledgeable of such practices.

The second step in the NCLEX test plan is to develop a method to test behaviors regarding the content formed in step one. The NCLEX-RN, Test Plan, provides a focused summary of the concepts to be tested. It serves not only to delineate what content to cover and the method of presenting the test questions but also serves to assist in developing a study guide in preparing those who will take the test. The NCLEX assesses the graduate nurse’s knowledge of required skills to practice nursing safely and competently.

Beliefs about people and nursing underlie the NCLEX-RN test plan. People are finite beings with varying capacities to function in society. (2) Each person is a unique and special individual existing in a system that they exert some control over, such as their beliefs, social systems, family systems, health customs. It is in this underlying theory of each individuals beliefs that the nursing process guides in the intervention to promote psychological and physical wellness.

Nursing is an art as much as it is a science, founded on a scientific body of knowledge that has been tested and proven effective in meeting the goals of each individual. The cognitive learning domain is a integral part of the NCLEX test plan. The use of Bloom’s taxonomy is the basis for writing and coding items (Bloom,e tal.,1956: Anderson & Krathwohl, 2001) Since the practice of nursing requires application or higher levels of cognitive ability, it becomes imperative to test graduate nurses complex and abstract reasoning.

The framework of Client Needs was selected for the NCLEX due to its all encompassing body of nursing knowledge that must be applied to successfully meet these needs. There are four distinct categories of Client Needs that are integrated into the exam, with two of the four categories subdivided to more adequately cover all subject matter. The categories are as follows:

A. Safe and Effective Care Environment

1. Management of Care

2. Safety and infection control

B. Promotion and Maintenance

C. Psychosocial Integrity

D. Physiological Integrity

1. Basic Care and Comfort

2. Pharmacological and Parenteral Therapies 3. Reduction of Risk Potential 4. Physiological Adaptation

Integrated concepts and processes are fundamental to the nursing practice and are applied to the various and categories of client needs.

These integrated concepts are as follows:

A. The nursing process- a scientific problem solving approach to client care that includes, assessment, analysis, planning, implementation and evaluation.

B. Caring- interaction between the nurse and client that provides for a nurturing, positive, and helpful environment whereby the client feels special and important knowing that the relationship that develops between themselves and the nurse will provide the needed assistance in their achieving a higher level of psychological and physical wellness.

C. Communication and Documentation- verbal and or nonverbal interactions between the nurse and client, significant others and multidisciplinary health teams. Validation either through written and or electronic entry which reflects that what has been done is documented and is within the scope of the nurses educational and licensure level as well as meeting the policies of the hospital or other client care environment.

D. Teaching-Learning- facilitating the acquirement of further knowledge which will lead to a more informed and skilled nurse with the application of the newly learned material.

The distribution of content and the percentage of test questions assigned to each Client Needs subcategory in the NCLEX test plan is based on the results of the Report of Finding from the 2005 RN Practice

Learn how you can pass the NET the first time the the Nursing Entrance Test Study Guide.

registered nursing

Kat Kat asked: I want to become a registered nurse and was originally planning on working full time. Just out of curiosity, does anyone know how much they make part time? I was hoping to do maybe 3 days a week at 8 or 12 hour shifts. Thanks!jobs in nursing
